The Volvo C70 is a handsome luxury hardtop convertible with elegant coupe lines that seats four.
The C70 uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine that's good for 227 horsepower on the base T5 model, and 250 hp on the upgraded Inscription variant. The engine, suspension and transmission are proven Volvo components, while the rigid chassis was designed to meet Volvo's industry-leading safety standards.
Styling inside and out is attractive yet understated, with comfortable seats, high-quality interior styling and fabrics, and thoughtful touches such as a clever cubby behind the center dash. The stereo sounds superb, and everything operates as it should.
New for 2012 is the introduction of three trim levels on two models, for a total of six possible configurations. Both the T5 and the Inscription variants are available in base, Premier Plus and Platinum trims. The C70 was launched as a 2006 model. Styling was revised for 2011 and the instrument panel was redesigned.
The C70 is an excellent highway cruiser with a solid feel that strikes a good balance between responsive handling and a smooth, well-controlled ride. The C70 is front-wheel drive. Consequently, it isn't as sporty as the rear-wheel-drive BMW 3 Series convertibles or Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class or the all-wheel-drive Audi A5 cabriolets, nor is its suspension as hard-edged but it rides smoother.
The 2012 Volvo C70 T5 ($40,450) comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, a power-retractable hardtop, heated mirrors, front and rear foglamps, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather upholstery, eight-way power front seats with driver memory function, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and an eight-speaker audio system with CD player, satellite radio, HD radio, an iPod/USB connector and an auxiliary audio jack. A Dynamic package ($1,000) comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights and a steering wheels with aluminum trim.
The 2012 Volvo C70 Inscription ($44,350) comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, high-gloss painted front grille, LED daytime running lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with aluminum inlay, unique stitching on the leather upholstery, a leather-covered dash, leather instrument panel and sport pedals, plus other features found on the T5.
The Premier Plus trim on both models ($1,000) adds rear park assist, keyless drive, auto-dimming rearview mirror and integrated garage door opener. The Platinum trim ($3,600) includes everything on the Premier Plus option plus navigation and a premium sound system with upgraded subwoofer.
Standalone options on both models include a Climate Package ($1,000) which adds headlight washers, rain and humidity sensors, interior air quality system and heated front seats. A la carte choices include a wind blocker ($495), blind spot monitoring system ($700), ski bag ($205) and a portable navigation system ($795) for cars not equipped with the Platinum trim.
Safety features include electronic stability control with traction control, and anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake Assistance. In addition to front airbags, there are side airbags in front, and air curtains which activate upwards from the doors, even with the windows rolled down. The Rollover Protection System activates a pop-up roll bar in a roll-over situation. Optional are Volvo's Blind Spot Information System and rear park assist.
